Will Shailene Woodley Play Mary Jane In Future Spider-Man Movies?

The 'Divergent' actress discusses her role in the Marvel universe.

For the last few years, Shailene Woodley has been busy doing things in pairs. This year, two films based on YA novels, "Divergent" and "The Fault in Our Stars," will hit the big screen. In addition to "Divergent," a big-budget potential franchise starter, she also filmed scenes for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" as Peter Parker's eventual girlfriend Mary Jane Watson.
While her small role in the upcoming Marvel didn't didn't make the final cut, an appearance in "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" was never officially taken off the table. When Woodley spoke with MTV News in Park City for the Sundance Film Festival, she cast doubt on the possibility of reprising the role of MJ because of an increasingly busy schedule.
Will Shailene Woodley Return For 'Spider-Man 3'
"I don't know anything, but seeing as how they picked up the next two 'Divergent' films, I don't know how I would keep my sanity with two big action films in one year," she said. "But anything can happen."
Though it might not boast the same scale as "Divergent" or "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," "The Fault in Our Stars" promises to deliver an emotional punch that rivals the might of any blockbuster. For the adaptation of John Green's beloved book, Woodley got to reteam with her "Divergent" co-star Ansel Elgort.
According to Woodley, fans of the book don't have to worry about one important scene in particular, because Elgort totally nailed it.
"There is one scene in the book where Gus goes to a gas station, and he tries to buy a pack of cigarettes because it's the only way he can assert his own independence after becoming very sick," Woodley said. "He did that scene so much justice, and he brought his all. It was midnight when we filmed it, and he just sat there and lost it for hours. I was just sort of in awe."
