From Miley's Twerk To Bey's Work: MTV News' Top 20 Stories of 2013

As we prep ourselves to put the coins on the eyes of this dying year, MTV News takes a look back into our archives to unearth our biggest stories of 2013 — we took a look back at page views, video streams and the extent of our coverage.
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll feel the tingling current as what is currently current becomes the past.
Check out our 20 top stories of 2013.

2013 may have been the year of Miley, but it was her twerk-filled performance at the MTV Video Music Awards — all up on a Beetlejuiced-out Robin Thicke's striped lap — that really kicked off her movement. Yup, she certainly "came in like a wrecking ball" in that teddybear onesie.

Cory Monteith, who played football star Finn Hudson on the hit show "Glee," passed away this year of "a mixed drug toxicity, involving heroin and alcohol," according to the British Columbia Coroners Service. The show aired a special episode mourning the loss of both the character and the actor.

In honor of his Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award win at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, Justin Timberlake executed an epic, career-spanning performance that included the 'NSYNC reunion that the world had been hoping for. Sadly, the reunion was fleeting — bye, bye, bye again boys.

Daft Punk certainly did more than "Get Lucky" with the release of their excellent Random Access Memories album in 2013, featuring standout instant classics like "Get Lucky" and "Lose Yourself To Dance." The robots executed a pretty intense and stellar marketing campaign leading up to the release — customized Coke bottles, an appearance on "The Simpsons," super-secret listening parties, etc — which was definitely worth the ample hype.

Baby North West may not be America's baby, but Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's adorable spawn was definitely one of the most popular tiny people this year — at least in the country that she does not, in fact, belong to. (England also had a pretty important infant to show for 2013.)

Fans and fellow actors alike were shocked when "Fast and Furious" star Paul Walker was killed this year in a single-car accident and explosion in Southern California. Co-star and friend Vin Diesel, for one, came forward to grieve the loss of the actor.

It was a big year for Kendrick Lamar — not only was he crowned the Hottest MC in the Game by MTV's Hip-Hop Brain Trust, he also served up one of the most show-stopping verses of the year on Big Sean's "Control." In said verse, K-Dot not only wears the crown, but his head gets so heavy he starts shaking it over the likes of Jermaine Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Wale, Pusha T, Meek Mill, A$AP Rocky and Drake.

The MTV Movie Awards got us hankering for "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" when it hosted the premiere of the trailer for the second film in the immensely popular series — presented by star Liam Hemsworth. Drooling. We were drooling.

Did you have a nice trip, J-Law? We're guessing yes, because even though Lawrence stumbled on her way to the stage at the Oscars, she walked away with the award for Best Actress for her turn in "Silver Lining Playbook."

MTV reality star Shain Gandee passed away in 2013, his body discovered in a vehicle along with his uncle David Gandee in Sissonville, West Virginia. To honor Gandee's memory, MTV canceled "Buckwild," the show on which he appeared.

Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose had a whirlwind engagement in 2013 — in that they got married twice. Kind of. The first wedding went down in July at a courthouse, the second with a bit more pomp and circumstance — or, you know, twerking.

DJ Khaled's onscreen proposal to Nicki Minaj — for which she was not present — might seem like some kind of elaborate joke, but dude came to MTV prepared. Yup, he brought a ring: a 10 karat radiant cut diamond ring from Rafaello & Co. in Manhattan's famed diamond district valued at about $500,000, to be exact. Too bad it all turned out to be promotion for "I Wanna Be With You," a jam that features his Khaled's alleged love. We want another hip-hop wedding, damn it!

When it comes to the casting of Zack Snyder's upcoming "Man of Steel" sequel, every announcement prompts almost super-human fan reactions. From Ben Affleck's casting as Batman to Gal Gadot's turn as Wonder Woman, we're certain this cast will be the talk of the town all the way up until the film premieres in 2015.

40 million votes, 64 bands, 26 days, that's what it took to secure Ed Sheeran victory during MTV's Musical March Madness tournament, handily beating out the likes of Thirty Seconds To Mars and the nearly always victorious Tokio Hotel. Talk about "The A Team."

Kanye West and "RapFix Live" host Sway Calloway had a bit of a tumultuous year — in a kind of loving brother way. First, there was that whole thing where we found out that Kanye gave Sway his first TV — a revelation that came after Ye found out about his less-than-stellar placement on the "Hottest MCs in the Game VIII" list. Then, Yeezy told Sway that he "ain't got the answers" when the host asked why Kanye didn't just get into fashion on his own dime. Despite their disputes, though, the two remain bound (2) together as the year draws to a close.

So, everyone who was ragging on Bey about the status of her new record, how does that crow taste? Beyonce shocked and awed the music world on Friday 13 when she dropped her self-titled album in the middle of the night — with zero fanfare. Chock fulla new jams and more than 15 music videos, the album is already primed to be a top seller this year. [Insert requisite "Bow Down" joke here.]

"Catfish" star Michael Fortunato died this year from a pulmonary embolism at age 26. Fortunato appeared on an episode in the second season of the show titled "Ashley and Mike," which detailed the pair's 7-year online relationship.

Justin Bieber has had a bit of a tough year — what with the whole mop bucket/weed photos/alleged lady of the evening thing. Despite all that, Biebs is constantly growing and changing, as he proved in a tweet this past year: "Everyday growing and learning. trying to be better. u get knocked down, u get up." We belieb in you, dude.

Miley Cyrus' twerktastic performance may have been jaw-dropping, but a snap of Will Smith and his fam mouths agape at the VMAs had nothing to do with Miley being Miley — no matter what some blogs said. The Smiths' shock and awe was directed at Lady Gaga's show-opening performance of "Applause," not Miley's show-stopping spectacle.

What Is The Smith Family Really Reacting To At The VMAs?

Immensely talented singer Ariana Grande burst onto the scene in 2013 with her debut studio album, Yours Truly. With a voice to rival Mariah's, fans were enthralled by Grande, leading them to wonder, naturally: Is she dating anyone? Some folks pointed to Bieber, a dream (or nightmare) that was soon abolished, while others guessed that the diminutive Grande was actually trysting with The Wanted's Nathan Sykes. Although they denied it in the beginning, second guess is the charm. It turns out the two are actually an item. Love and success? What more could a girl ask for? Maybe a Grammy nom next year?
