Katy Perry Beats Lady Gaga For Title Of Twitter Queen Of 2013
Katy Perry was everywhere in 2013. Not only was her Prism LP a hit, but the California Gurl was also a big shot on social media — in fact, she was the biggest shot.
Perry gained more Twitter followers than any artist in any genre in 2013, according to the social media site. She added 15 million followers to her flock this year alone, bringing her total to just over 48 million. Close behind her is Justin Bieber, who gained gained 13.8 million new friends this year. Though she only gained 7.6 million new followers this year, Lady Gaga and her 40.8 million little digital monsters held on strong, making her the third most-followed artist.
Hip-hop ruled on social networking site this year. Kanye West's Yeezus and Drake's Nothing Was the Same were the most tweeted-about albums in that order, but Miley Cyrus made a ton of noise as well. Bangerz generated 1,590,351 tweets, making it the third-most tweeted-about LP, while Taylor Swift's 2012 album Red still managed to make waves in 2013 bringing on 1.4 million tweets.
Twitter also tallied the top 50 U.S. music-related trends and hashtags. #music and the ever-popular #nowplaying held the top slots; the #RapGod hashtag was the top artist-specific trend. Bieber spawned three top trends (#IfIWasJustinBieber, Justin Bieber and Justin Bieber YTMA Artist of the Year.)
One Direction's Niall Horan shouted himself out on his 20th birthday and had the top music Retweet. "Yesss ! I'm 20 ! Wohooo ! No more teens," he messaged on September 20 before it was retweeted 367,011 times. In fact, One Direction held four of the top five retweets of the year, while Drake Bell came in at #5 with his Kim Kardashian/Kanye West related joke. "In honor of Kim and Kanye's baby 'North West' I will be naming my first son 'Taco,'" he wrote on June 23.
